Kindergarten & First Grade: Where Play Meets Purpose

Oakland School’s legacy of individualized, strengths-based education now extends to early elementary learners through a thoughtfully designed Kindergarten and First Grade (K–1) program. With a focus on personalized learning and hands-on exploration, the K–1 program is rooted in Oakland’s nature-based philosophy and decades of expertise supporting diverse learning needs.

Program Highlights

Learning Through Play in Nature-Based Classrooms

Situated on 450 acres of fields, trails, and working farm space, Oakland turns nature into a classroom. Children explore academic concepts through experiences such as journaling under trees, measuring water for horse care, and counting eggs in the chicken coop. Math, science, literacy, and problem-solving are woven into daily, joyful routines.

Integrated and Creative Academics

We offer tailored instruction in early literacy and math, woven seamlessly into play and exploration. Each child’s learning style is honored through differentiated activities that spark curiosity and deepen understanding. Borrowing from Oakland’s rich 75+ year history of helping children who learn differently, our K-1 program is uniquely positioned to flag potential learning differences, optimizing early intervention approaches from the beginning.

Small Group Learning for Confidence and Connection

With intentionally low student-to-teacher ratios, children receive the individual attention they need to thrive. The supportive environment encourages students to take initiative, express themselves, and grow at their own pace—whether reading aloud to a pony or leading a nature walk. Teachers nurture strengths and gently guide children through challenges to build confidence.

Small Group Learning for Confidence and Connection

Low student-to-teacher ratios allow for close relationships and individualized guidance. Whether leading a nature walk or reading aloud to a pony, children are empowered to express themselves, take initiative, and build self-confidence through consistent, personalized support in a nurturing environment.
